What is SITES?
SCP & Next Play are focused on sustainability. The campus achieved LEED Gold certification in 2013 and are constantly incorporating new, sustainability-driven management systems in anticipation of re-certification in 2018. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) focuses primarily on structures and their environments. It does not certify landscape areas (without structures). The work included in the Park Renovation project is outside the building envelopes and does not qualify for LEED certification.
In 2009, the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) released the SITES rating system. GBCI realized that a Rating System could provide developers/owners a road map for sustainable design, installation & maintenance. Our (potential) SITES-certified project will reduce potable water usage, filter stormwater, reduce energy needs, improve campus outdoor air quality, and increase outdoor recreation opportunities during the business day. Categories for reporting include: Water, Material Selection, Construction, Education & Monitoring, Soils & Vegetation, Human Health & Well-Being and Operations & Maintenance.
SITES certification is based on a point system, the number of points that a project earns determines the certification level it receives. Below is a list of certification levels. SCP is striving for SITES Gold certification.
Certification Level Points
SITES Certified 70-84 points
SITES Silver 85-99 points
SITES Gold 100-134 points
SITES Platinum 135+ points earned
We encourage you to visit the SITES website for more information: http://www.sustainablesites.org/about
